If you want to express your ideas and do not have the time or inclination to put them into words, please contact me, Dean Schermerhorn, at Concise Communications.
I have written everything from technical writing to employee newsletters to Web content to resumes. In doing so I have demonstrated a facility for gathering complex information, organizing it and translating it into clear, concise communication that informs and motivates the reader. I also have written press releases that have garnered free media coverage for clients. Clients have benefited from my assistance in adding clarity and impact to their resumes.
I grew up in Portland, Oregon, and earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Portland State University. After earning a Master of Arts in history from the University of California Santa Barbara, my career began with a publisher of history bibliography and reference works.
I progressed to editing for a pharmaceutical manufacturing trade magazine and then to internal policy and procedures communication for a leading California bank. That position provided an opportunity to grow into technical writing and project management, which I continued with Guess, the apparel manufacturer, and with Renown Health, then known as Washoe Medical Center.
As Communication Coordinator with Hometown Health, I found a position that suited my writing and editing skills, recognized my commitment to quality and earned the trust of senior leaders. Achievements at Hometown Health opened the door to advancement into the Renown Health Communications Department.
After years as an employee, I decided to set my own direction and run my own business. While I continue to write about health care and medicine, I also seek opportunities to apply my writing talents in other industries and areas of interest. These include current events, politics and government, music and the arts, history and environmental quality.
A client praised my ability to "research and tackle complex medical terminology and translate it into lay terms that are easily understood." (See Testimonials.) Learn more about my career in communication and read samples of my writing.
